Please tell me that Michael Phelps' three gold medals were not fake.
Because it turns out that the Opening Ceremonies may have been a hall of mirrors.
At the opening ceremonies NBC commented that some of the fireworks were actually on video.
Now Chen Qigang, the musical director of the ceremonies, has revealed Lin Miaoke, the little girl who sang, was actually miming because the real singer was not attractive enough.
The real singer of Ode to the Motherland was seven-year-old Yang Peiyi who is described as having a chubby face and uneven teeth.
"The reason why little Yang was not chosen to appear was because we wanted to project the right image, we were thinking about what was best for the nation," Chen said. "The reason was for the national interest. The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feelings, and expression.''

Giant pyrotechnic footprints that marched across the sky in the countdown to the Bejing Olympics opening ceremony were faked for video coverage.
According to The Beijing Times what people inside the stadium and watching on television saw were computer graphics of the footprints inserted into coverage.
Gao Xiaolong, the head of the opening ceremony visual effects team, said it had taken almost a year to create the 55-second sequence.
Actual fireworks could be seen outside the stadium but it was logistically impossible to film them by helicopter, so the decision was made to recreate the effect digitally.
The last foot print was visible from inside the stadium and was captured on film.
Mr Gao said the animators had gone to the extent of getting weather information so as to recreate the night time smog conditions and camera shake was added to simulate filming from a helicopter.
"Seeing how it worked out, it was still a bit too bright compared to the actual fireworks," he said.
"But most of the audience thought it was filmed live - so that was mission accomplished."

I don't remember the exact source, I googled it. The story was also on the front page of the New York Times.
I doubt the little girl had a full understanding of what was going on (did they explain "sorry you are too ugly to be seen
on televison" and even if she did it was still a less than honorable thing for the Chinese to do.

no chance in hell to see that...if it doesnt involve Phelps, Misty May, or NBA players, you wont see it on NBC! very narrow minded coverage...
how about some Judo, Table tennis, or badmitton, lets see some stuff we dont see ....
Phelps is a good swimmer, but he won the same race 4 different times, just different distances....its like giving out a gold medal for winning a baseball game after 5, 7 and 9 innings....

Uh, yeah, but I don't think the US gov't gave them the sterioids. They got stripped of their medals as well. Doubtful that will happen with the underage Chinese gymnists.

Agreed, NBC is the all Phelps, all the time channel. They only the other sports they show are the ones that the USA has an outside chance to medal in, like the yucky synchronized diving.
the best thing about the coverage so far - no TV timeouts during the basketball games...really makes the game fly by.

Not sure what you're watching because I've seen plenty of boxing, cycling, badminton, handball, etc.
I'm just going to be straight up honest with you and say that your Phelps comment seems pretty ignorant as well. Have you ever competed in a sport such as track or swimming?
And I find it hard to fault NBC for showing Phelps. If swimming isn't your cup of tea, then that's one thing, but there is a U.S. athlete shattering records on a daily basis and I can't even imagine why they wouldn't show all of it. I'll be a little less blunt than Goot, but Phelps is breaking records in fly, free and IM and on free and IM relays so I don't think the 5th, 7th and 9th inning analogy holds much water. That he's making it look easy may be the problem - another day, another record, ho hum - but breaking records in so many different strokes and at different distances is unprecedented.
